Hi Lynn. I like your sensory discovery - it's good having a fellow palate explorer. Bitter-nutty-chocolary. Sounds pretty good. I'm about to read a book called The Second Brain. It's about how our gut is actually a seritonin producer. Figure that - our gut affects our moods. Originally I tried to fight the tendency to becoming a coffee snob, but I don't think there's any way around it. As Paul said, "Knowledge puffs up." Oh well, what things we go through just to get a good cup of coffee. Last thing - I turn 45 this week. Mom sent me birthday money - so I'm buying some good green coffee beans. I'll roast some and send some to you. Just one requirement: post your opinion of what you think it tastes like.

I got chocolaty!!!! I use San Fransisco Bay French Roast Beans from Costco. They are only $12 per bag, so it's good for the budget. It is very bitter and maybe a bit nutty, but considering that coffee is a bean- I should say beany. I purchased Ghirardelli 86% dark coca squares the other day because dark chocolate is supposed to boost seritonin levels and I am in desperate need of seritonin. When I had one-it was like eating a cup of my San Fransisco Bay coffee....my coffee is chocolaty. Take that! I have also noticed that most grocery store bought coffees smell like popcorn and taste like skunk weed (Sam's Club Fair Trade from Walmart and 8 O'clock Columbian). Does that make me a coffee snob?

Nice comment about the "fruity afteraste," sorry I cannot relate to that. We'll try to find you some un-roasted Kona coffee this weekend. I am hoping to take a nice ride around the island and stop in Waialua where they are producing the "Kona" coffee on Oahu.

To expose a little bit of my coffee snobbery - I personally like coffee made in a French press and a vacuum pot hands down over any drip machine. The body is definitely thicker and even stickier to me. I actually even like the slight grittiness over the drip machine. But that's me.

I think maybe Emily is talking about a electric vacuum coffee maker. I know the heating elements in those do burn out. I for one will admit I get just as much of a kick from watching a vacuum brewer doing its thing as I do the coffee itself. I actually did a little side by side comparison this morning with my regular drip machine and I though the vacuum coffee was a little smoother and definitely less bitter. That being said both cups were quite good and I wouldn't complain if served either at a coffee shop.

What happened when they died? Did they just not filter back down anymore? I'm surprised you've had so many. Did they all die after a number of months?

you are right about the great show. kids love to watch them brew.
we've had 3 (maybe 4) vacuum coffee makers and all of them developed a very funny plastic flavor after a while. 2 of them just completely died one day and I had to send each back to Bodum and they sent another one back.
I loved the coffee, while it worked, but we gave up with them a few months ago and bought a regular Black & Decker maker. Makes fine coffee and no funny tastes

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I know it is just a matter of time before I embark into the espresso world. I guess I just want to enjoy every step of the way.
